My 91 318 IS failed at 94,000 miles on the profile gasket. The dealer was very reluctant to provide any insight or help. I finally got a phonecall from BMW NA after a certified letter. My emails and phonecalls were practically ingnored. The problem is very common because BMW issued a technical service bulletin on it. No extended warranties, no recalls on it, practically you are up the creek for a faulty gasket. The repair is around $800 to $1000 alone. I begged the BMW rep to only reimburse for the parts since they were defective. He refused to do so. My father and I repaired the car ourselves. We went to a discount warehouse and bought geniune BMW parts for cost. What cost me $200 would have cost $400 at BMW! Who is ripping off who? I have compiled notes, emails, documents that pertain to the failure of this gasket. I have nearly a 60 page document. I plan on releasing my document to BMW NA to show them that people have had enough. Why has Mercedes issued recalls on models 10 years old with repairs that could cost in the $1000's? They care! I have lost confidence in the company, and I will be driving a German built Ford product for now! Anyone interested in some of my notes, I will be glad to share! A class action lawsuit dealing with product liability would be the answer to the problem. Just takes time and money!
